The 10 Most Costly Pool Mistakes — And How to Avoid Them
In 15+ years of building pools across India, we've been called in to fix hundreds of poorly-built pools. Almost every one fell into one of these 10 traps. This guide will save you lakhs of rupees and years of frustration.
Mistake #1: Wrong Pool Sizing
The trap: Building the biggest pool the plot can fit.
Reality: A 20x40 pool costs 60% more than a 15x30, uses 60% more water, 60% more chemicals, and only 20% of families actually swim its full length.
Fix: Ask yourself: how many people will swim at once? A pool 15x30 ft comfortably handles 5-6 adults. Go bigger only if you host large gatherings weekly.
Mistake #2: Cheap or Skipped Waterproofing
The trap: Vendors offering a "budget" pool skip proper waterproofing to keep the quote low.
Reality: 80% of pool leaks trace back to inadequate waterproofing. Fixing a leak later can cost ₹1-3 lakhs and requires draining the pool for weeks.
Fix: Insist on double-coat crystalline waterproofing (Sika, Fosroc, MYK) with a written 5-year warranty. It should be a separate itemised line in your quotation.
Mistake #3: Improper Filtration Design
The trap: Buying an undersized pump/filter to save ₹50,000.
Reality: An undersized filter runs 12+ hours a day, wastes electricity, and still leaves water cloudy. A pump that should be 1.5 HP is often installed as 0.75 HP.
Fix: The filter turnover rate should be 4-6 hours (i.e., total pool water passes through the filter every 4-6 hours). Your builder must calculate this — ask for the number in writing.
Mistake #4: Lack of Drainage Planning
The trap: Not planning where 60,000 litres of pool water will go when you drain for maintenance.
Reality: Draining without proper channels floods your garden, damages your neighbour's compound, or backs up into the pump room.
Fix: A proper drainage line (150mm PVC) to a stormwater drain or soak pit MUST be part of the initial civil works. Retrofitting later means digging up your finished deck.
Mistake #5: Wrong Tile Selection
The trap: Choosing bathroom-grade ceramic tiles because they look pretty in the sample.
Reality: Regular ceramic tiles crack, discolour, and pop off pool walls within 3-5 years due to chlorine + UV.
Fix: Use only swimming pool grade tiles — vitrified glass mosaic (Bisazza, Trend, or Indian equivalents) with epoxy grouting (not cement grout). Anti-skid on steps.
Mistake #6: Insufficient Equipment Room Space
The trap: Squeezing the pump, filter, chemical drums, and controls into a 3x4 ft cupboard.
Reality: No airflow → equipment overheats → pump fails in 2 years. Chemical drums leak in an unventilated space → dangerous.
Fix: Reserve at least 6x8 ft for a pump room with cross-ventilation, a floor drain, 15A power outlets, and hooks for maintenance tools. Or better yet — go pipeless and skip the pump room entirely.
Mistake #7: Ignoring Future Maintenance Costs
The trap: Focusing only on the construction cost and ignoring recurring expenses.
Reality: A 15x30 pool costs ₹6,000-8,000/month in AMC + chemicals + electricity. That's ₹75,000 – ₹1 lakh a year every year, forever.
Fix: Before you sign the contract, ask your builder for the projected annual AMC cost. Choose pipeless filtration and LED lighting to cut ongoing bills by 30-40%.
Mistake #8: Hiring Inexperienced Contractors
The trap: Going with the local mason who "has built a pool before" — 40% cheaper than a specialist.
Reality: Pool construction is 20% civil + 80% specialist MEP (mechanical/electrical/plumbing). A general mason cannot calculate filter turnover, waterproof correctly, wire underwater lights safely, or design a balance tank. You WILL pay a specialist later to fix their mistakes.
Fix: Hire a dedicated pool company with 5+ years and 20+ portfolio projects. Insist on visiting 2-3 of their existing pools older than 3 years.
Mistake #9: No Electrical Safety Standards
The trap: Skipping proper earthing, RCCB, and equipotential bonding to save ₹30,000.
Reality: Water + electricity is a life-safety issue. Improper wiring around a pool has caused fatal accidents in India.
Fix: Insist on:
- Dedicated 30mA RCCB for pool circuit
- Equipotential bonding of all metal (grab rails, ladder, coping reinforcement)
- All underwater lights on 12V DC (not 240V AC)
- Licensed electrician certification post-installation
Mistake #10: Skipping the Written Contract
The trap: Verbal agreements on scope, timeline, warranty.
Reality: Timeline stretches from 3 months to 8 months. Scope changes are billed extra without warning. Warranty claims are refused.
Fix: Every quotation must be:
- Itemised (excavation, RCC, waterproofing, tile, filtration, coping, deck, electricals — separately)
- Timeline-bound with milestones + penalty clauses
- Warranty specific — 5 years on structure, 5 years on waterproofing, 2 years on equipment (minimum)
- Payment-schedule linked to milestones — never pay more than 30% before excavation is complete
How Aquarist Pools Prevents These Mistakes
We follow a 40-point checklist for every project. Waterproofing, filtration sizing, electrical safety, drainage — every checkbox is documented and signed off before we hand over your pool.
