Why Bangalore Pools Need a Special Maintenance Routine
Bangalore's climate is one of the best in India for swimming pools - mild summers, no hard winter, and a long usable season. But the city has three distinct weather phases that each demand a different maintenance approach:
- Summer (Feb - May): High evaporation, intense UV, heavier pool usage
- Monsoon (Jun - Oct): Heavy rainfall, debris, rapid pH drops, algae blooms
- Winter (Nov - Jan): Cooler nights, lower usage, chemistry stabilisation
This guide from Aquarist Pools and Fitness gives you a season-by-season playbook to keep your Bangalore pool crystal clear all year.
Summer Maintenance (February to May)
- Top up water 2-3 times a week to compensate for evaporation
- Test chlorine daily - UV breaks down chlorine fast; aim for 1.0 - 3.0 ppm
- Check pH twice a week - target 7.2 - 7.6
- Run filtration 8-10 hours/day during peak heat
- Use a pool cover at night to cut evaporation by 70%
- Shock the pool weekly if it sees heavy weekend use
Monsoon Maintenance (June to October) - The Most Critical Season
Bangalore monsoons can drop 200+ mm of rain in a week. This dilutes chemicals, washes debris into the pool, and triggers fast algae growth. Most pool issues we are called for happen between July and September.
- Use a heavy-duty pool cover when rain is forecast
- Skim daily - leaves, twigs and dust load up quickly
- Test pH every 2 days - rainwater is acidic; pH can drop below 6.8
- Add stabilised chlorine (trichlor) to maintain residual after rain
- Shock weekly with calcium hypochlorite
- Algaecide every 10 days as a preventive dose
- Backwash sand filter after every heavy rain
- Check water level - if it rises above the skimmer, drain to mid-skimmer level
Winter Maintenance (November to January)
- Reduce filtration runtime to 4-6 hours/day
- Keep chlorine at 1.0 ppm minimum even if pool isn't in use
- Cover the pool when not in use to reduce dust and bird activity
- Run pump for 30 mins daily even on unused weeks to prevent stagnation
- Do a deep clean at the start of December - a perfect "reset" before next summer
The Weekly Aquarist Checklist (Print This)
- Skim surface and empty skimmer basket
- Brush walls and waterline tile
- Vacuum pool floor (manual or robotic)
- Test pH, chlorine, alkalinity, hardness
- Dose chemicals as required
- Backwash sand filter (or rinse pipeless cartridge)
- Check pump pressure, skimmer flow, return jets
- Log readings in your pool maintenance diary
Common Bangalore Pool Problems (and Fixes)
- Green algae after monsoon: Shock + algaecide + brush walls + run filter 24 hrs
- Cloudy water: Check pH (likely above 7.8), add pH reducer, run clarifier
- Eye irritation: Combined chlorine too high - shock the pool
- Tile scaling: Calcium hardness too high - partial water change
- Black spots: Black algae - aggressive brushing + spot treatment needed
